Bamboo Wind Chimes Offer An Exotic Sound

While metal rods are the most popular style of wind chime, there are plenty of other options. One that's common in other parts of the world is bamboo. Bamboo wind chimes have been made in Asia for hundreds, if not thousands of years, and are an important part of Feng Shui garden design. They also have a pleasant sound, earthier than the bright ring of metal, and are decorative. Unlike wood, bamboo wind chimes are resistant to weather and time, although they may eventually need to be replaced. This makes bamboo a great choice for both indoor and outdoor use.

There are a number of different styles of wind chimes made from bamboo. However, the most common are those produced by craftspeople in Indonesia. Commonly called Bali wind chimes, these attractive ornaments feature not only pleasant sounding tubes of bamboo, but hand carved and painted ornaments. Carvings of people, elephants, and mythological scenes are not uncommon. Generally, bamboo wind chimes from Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia are a little more expensive than mass produced items, but they also offer a hand made charm that those items lack. Expect to pay thirty dollars or more for a wind chime that has been hand made by an Indonesian craftsperson. For a commercially manufactured one, you can find small examples for as little as ten dollars.

Making your own bamboo wind chimes is also a popular hobby. It's not hard, but if you give this a try, understand that the sounds produced will not be tuned. Random wind chime music appeals to some, however, and a chime you make yourself certainly sounds better than one you've bought. All you need is some dried bamboo, in varying lengths and diameters, a saw and drill, some cord to suspend your wind chimes, and glass beads. Cut your bamboo to the length you desire, and drill two holes in the end. String your cord through the holes, and test the sound with another piece of bamboo. If you don't like the sound of your chime, cut it shorter until you do, or try another piece.

Measure a horizontal piece of bamboo, as long as the group of chimes is wide. Hang your chimes from this piece, adjusting the length by eye. Then, hang glass beads to help your bamboo wind chime balance properly. Place a piece of hanging hardware on your horizontal piece, and you're read to hang your new bamboo wind chime up and listen to its beautiful music. Whether you make your own chime or choose to purchase one, bamboo wind chimes are a great, and exotic way to relax.
