Using Wind Chime Patterns to Make Your Own Garden Ornaments

If you've ever taken a look at the common garden wind chime and thought it would be simple to make, you're not alone. It's not hard to make an attractive, nice sounding chime instead of buying one. As a bonus, you'll have the satisfaction of having made your own chime, as well as the knowledge that no one else is going to have one quite like it. So, if you'd like to enjoy the soothing sounds and attractive looks of a wind chime in your garden, here's how to make one.

The first step is to decide what type of project you'd like to make. After that, you can decide which wind chime patterns to use. There are plenty of options available. Wind chimes can be made from metal, wooden, or bamboo tubes, bell shapes, pieces of glass, plastic pipe, and even old cutlery. The look you'd like your wind chime to have will affect the materials you use, and the type of chime you create. Avoid solid objects for your chime, unless you have a few bell or tube shaped ones included, however. If an object isn't hollow in some way, it will tend to have a dull or lifeless sound to it, making a disappointing wind chime.

Size and desired sound are additional considerations that have to be paid attention to together. The size and thickness of the wind chimes you make will affect the sound. So, if you want to have a very small chime, be willing to put up with a high pitched sound. Likewise, if you prefer a large chime, a lower tone will be the result. If you don't care about size, but have some preference about tone, you can play around with different material sizes and thicknesses until you get one you like. Just suspend a test piece from a cord the way you'll be hanging it from the chime, and strike it with a piece of the same material. This will cause it to sound, and give you a good idea what it's tone will be. Always hang your wind chime so that it can swing freely. If it tangles, or is touching another surface, the tone won't be true.

Once you know what you want your wind chime to look and sound like, you can start searching for wind chime patterns. One good place to look is your local library's craft section. Books and magazines on wind chimes might be available. If you don't find them there, check the book store. Alternatively, look online. A quick check in your favorite search engine will turn up plenty of wind chime patterns. Of course, be careful which you choose. Patterns offered for free have no guarantee that they'll work. You may have to make it up a little as you go along. However, even a slightly flawed wind chime pattern is better than no guideline at all. Since wind chimes are an easy project in most materials, you shouldn't have much trouble creating an attractive chime that's also soothing in sound and unique.
